| Did you know you could practice "tough stuff" Saturday mornings, at the Studio 88-SWING? Normally twice per month, you get a supervised practice. One of our teachers will be there to answer any question and help you improve your dance. People who fallow Swing I and Swing II are invited from 10am to 11:30am Students from Swing III and up are invited from 11:30am to 1pm Only 5$ for a supervised practice, but if you buy a 20$ card, you get a free 5th practice!! The Shim Sham in Flash Mob... Interested ? |
| A student from the studio started an independent project to promote peace & understanding as well as to share a rich cultural heritage from Montreal with people from all over the world. The project is a dance flash mob. The highlight of the event will be the national and international swing champions (and teachers at Studio 88-SWING and members of the Swinging Air Force) Annie Trudeau, Max Pitruzzella, Patrick Szmidt and Natasha Ouimet who will teach the routine to everyone and dance it with the crowd. | Jammin the City is *THE* occasion to polish your dancing, get together with amazing dancers, party, listen to awesome music and generally have a great time! Montreal, Canada's swing dance mecca, has the honor of hosting on November 27-29th, for the very first time together in the metropolis, Nick Williams and Carla Heiney. Amazing dancers in both improv and routines, Nick and Carla have collected an impressive string of first places over the last two years, and will be sharing their awesomeness with us during 2 full days of fun-filled workshops. How many times will you have the opportunity to have those two legends so close to home? The answer: not many, so register now! To whom this workshop is aimed, I can hear you asking? You must know how to Lindy Hop. The workshop will be aimed towards intermediate and advanced dancers, and will be accessible but challenging for everyone. | Max and Annie helped in the organization of the recreation of the most famous swing dance scene in the history: the Jam with the Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, in the 1941 movie Hellzapoppin'. They also incarnated the dancers All Minns (Max) and Willa Mae Ricker (Annie) in the show that was presented in NY in honor of Frankie Manning, the man we were celebrating the 95th birthday that weekend, but that unfortunately passed away a few weeks before that. Claudia Joyal-Laplante also was a dancer in the show, incarnating Norma Miller. Auditions for the SAF Bootcamp team |
“From small beginnings come great things.” This team that started up in 2006 is an excellent door into the SAF family, it is one of the three Lindy Hop teams of the Swinging Air Force. We are presently recruting new members for this team. If you have taken a few sessions at our studio or elsewhere, crave a new challenge and like to work as a team, the SAF Bootcamp might be for you! Specific Objectives : Work on various aspects and techniques of Lindy Hop, Charleston, and aerials and learn a choreography with the goal to perform and/or compete. Admission Criteria • Swing I to IV or the equivalent • Attention and seriousness when it comes to listening to the coach • Positive attitude, sportsmanship and cooperation • Punctuality to practices and events • Open mindedness to what and how things are taught • Desire and capacity for intense, regular physical exertion Practice Schedule Sundays from 6PM to 8PM Auditions The auditions will take place on Saturday September 12th from and will entail a short interview and evaluation of your dance ability. This Notre-Dame MBA is one crazy workaholic who has been known to use his free times for such things as working as a consultant for McKinsey and Company and today moonlights as Director of Marketing & Business Development at Caprion Proteomics (a Montreal based Biotech firm)! With a life-long love of Jazz and blues, a background in Hip Hop and a strong affection for partying, he took to swing like a trumpet player to Miles Davis. His stage presence and charisma earned him the nickname ''Charmin' Dee'' early on in his swing career. Dee has been hired as a dance teacher, DJ, MC and judge competitions for major swing events all over North America including The World Lindy-Hop Championships, New Years Extravaganzza in Danvers MA, ALHC, Beantown, The Quebec Swing Rendez-Vous, The Montreal Swing-Fest, Camp Hollywood and the infamous Austin , Toronto, C-Rex and C-Dex Exchanges. He has also become recognized on both sides of the border for his entertaining and effective teaching style. Media savy, Dee has been featured in The Gazette, Clin d'Oeil, La Presse, The McGill Reporter, La Nouvelle de Sherbrooke, Montreal Campus and the Taconic Press has been seen on Musique Plus, CTV, TVA, RDS, YTV and SRC His voice has been heard in various movie/TV translations and on SRC radio1, CKUT and CIBL radio stations. Natasha : The arts being her passion since her childhood, Natasha fell especially in love with dance. After studying a variety of styles and being a part of the KlaXson Tap Dance Company for five years, she met the Swinging Air Force and developed a love for Swing. A performing and competing member of the Swinging Air Force since 2005, she teaches Lindy Hop, Charleston, West Coast Swing, Solo Blues, Tap and more at Studio 88-SWING and coaches three of the seven Swinging Air Force teams. In February 2008, she opened a branch of the Studio 88-SWING in the West Istland with her partner Patrick Szmidt. She has placed in competions over 25 times in the past two years, several in Team and Cabaret divisions with the SAF and has placed in Lindy Hop, WCS, Balboa, Jack&Jills, Showcase and Canadian Showcase. ***Swinging Air Force dance Team*** The Swinging Air Force dance team, founded in 1998, has performed for numerous clients (festivals, corporations, television stations, movie producers) including: Place des Arts with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Canada Day in Ottawa, "Le Match des Etoiles" TV Show at Radio-Canada, Wintercity Festival in Toronto, the Montreal Casino … They have created the Full-length feature shows "100 YEARS: The History of Swing" in 2005 and "Swing-Out TONIGHT" in 2008. First of all Patricia and Fred will be teaching at the Montreal Balboa revue this upcoming weekend (26-28th of June). That same weekend, Marc-André, Natasha and Patrick will be teaching at Beantown. This will be a busy summer for Max and Annie... They will teach at the Sidanse festival in the Saguenay region from the 26th to the 28th of June. Then they spend some time in Denver for Swingtime in the Rockies from the 23rd to the 26th of July. They will directly go to Camp Hollywood in Los Angeles (30th of July to the 2nd of August) and finish the summer at the ILHC in Washington (28th to the 30th of August). In September Max and Annie will leave for 4 weeks to teach in Paris, Berlin, Liverpool, UK, and Toulouse, France. They will be really happy to see you in October! |

It is with great regret that we inform you that legendary lindy hopper and inspiration to tens of thousands of dancers around the world Mr. Frankie Manning passed away peacefully early in the morning on April 27, 2009. He was a kind and generous soul who could light up a room with his smile. He will be greatly missed. In 3 weeks will be holded an event to honor and celebrate his long and incredible life. | The city of St-Lin has fallen under the love spell of Swing. Since fall, young and less young take swing classes every week to learn great routines and they want to show it off this Saturday! This big show has a "Match des étoiles" theme and it will be hosted by Didier Jean-François as Normand Brathwaite. Great hand of applause for Catherine Desjardins who taught, choreographed and directed the whole show and to Joelle who also taught the group. You are taking classes at Studio 88-SWING for quite some time now... You had 4 different teachers but when your go to register, there're many names that don't ring a bell? Would you like to know them better? Well, this is an invitation for the MEET THE TEACHERS night, this Saturday, December 29th at Studio 88-SWING! You will have the opportunity to see your regular teachers and meet your future teachers (many of them are in training) while they participate at the first inter-teacher competition! This competition will be judged by the 8 times Champions MAX and ANNIE. Come meet, talk and dance with these new teachers!
But how will you recognize them? Teachers in training will be wearing SAF t-shirts. Regular "women" teachers will have a flower in their hair and regular "men" teachers will be wearing a shirt and a tie. This is something you don't want to miss!

| Max and Annie, our champions here at Studio 88-Swing have been invited to perform at a very special event in New York City next May 2009. The Event is Frankie Manning's 95th Birthday. Frankie Manning is a swing legend, he danced back in the days as part of the Whithey's Lindy Hoppers and is still alive and still spreads the joy of dance and Lindy Hop around the world. Swing I: If you have friends that would like to learn Swing to fallow you in all your evenings, you can tell them that two Swing I classes are starting up, Monday the 13th of October at 8:35 at l'Union Française (429 Viger Est, perfect for UQAM students!) with Olivier and Cathou or Wednesday the 15th of October at 8:35 at the Studio 88-SWING (372 Crémazie Est, metro Crémazie) with Max and Natasha. Swing II: Since we had really popular Swing I classes last session, we are offering two Swing II classes to catch up with the demand! These will take place Tuesday the 14th of October at 8:35pm with Oliver and Annie and Wednesday the 15th of October at 7:00pm with Max and Claudia. There's still places left in both classes, you just have to choose with your schedule!
Swing V: Advanced dancers, we are offering this class for you! It's going to start Tuesday the 14th of October at 7:00pm with champions Max and Annie. You can register now!
The BIG APPLE: Dive into the 30's and learn this dynamic Afro-American line dance. You will have loads of fun and challenge with Annie! This is a 3 week class and it's starting Wednesday the 15th of October at 7:00. Reserve your spot!
Blues I: This class will teach you the moves on slow music. Come and meet Aidan with his partner starting Thursday the 16th of October at 8:35pm. Suprisingly, we still have places for some girls without partners, so girls, take this rare opportunity and come join these lonely fellows!
WCS I and II: If you would like to try a new style, the Studio 88-SWING strongly suggests West Coast Swing. The beginners (WCS I) class will start the 16th of October at 7:00 pm with Patrick and Natasha. Girls: there's still 2 places if you want to register alone... Couples, you are always welcome! WCS II should start this Tuesday 14th of October at 7:00 pm with Julien and Claudia. There's still some spots available... hurry!

The Bootcamp team from the SAF is organizing a financing activity to give the opportunity to it's dancers to live their first competitive experience out of Canada during the "American Lindy Hop Championships". October 18th, the team members will provide all the services, from the bar to the animation. They will also impress you with their talent in dance, music and voice. | After having created the first ever Balboa team in the world in 2003 (SAF:ALL BAL TEAM), more ground has been broken this year by the Swinging Air Force and Studio 88-SWING team in the realm of Balboa: Patricia & Fred have become the first ever Canadians to win a first place at the ALL BALBOA WEEKEND (2008) in Cleveland. The ABW is recognized by many as the TOP balboa event worldwide. Not to be outdone, the Studio 88-SWING team also secured the most top 3 placements at the Canadian Balboa Division with many dancers placing in several divisions. We also secured 1st place at the ALHC thanks to Patrick Szmidt and Natasha Ouimet!
